Interpretation as Abduction

چکیده
Hobbs, J.R., M.E. Stickel, D.E. Appelt and P. Martin, Interpretation as abduction, Artificial Intelligence 63 (1993) 69-142. Abduction is inference to the best explanation. In the TACITUS project at SRI we have developed an approach to abductive inference, called "weighted abduction", that has resulted in a significant simplification of how the problem of interpreting texts is conceptualized. The interpretation of a text is the minimal explanation of why the text would be true. More precisely, to interpret a text, one must prove the logical form of the text from what is already mutually known, allowing for coercions, merging redundancies where possible, and making assumptions where necessary. It is shown how such "local pragmatics" problems as reference resolution, the interpretation of compound nominals, the resolution of syntactic ambiguity and metonymy, and schema recognition can be solved in this manner. Moreover, this approach of "interpretation as abduction" can be combined with the older view of "parsing as deduction" to produce an elegant and thorough integration of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, one that spans the range of linguistic phenomena from phonology to discourse structure. Finally, we discuss means for making the abduction process efficient, possibilities for extending the approach to other pragmatics phenomena, and the semantics of the weights and costs in the abduction scheme.

Abduction for Discourse Interpretation: A Probabilistic Framework
Abduction allows us to model interpretation of discourse as the explanation of observables, given additional knowledge about the world. In an abductive framework, many explanations can be constructed for the same observation, requiring an approach to estimate the likelihood of these alternative explanations. We show that, for discourse interpretation, weighted abduction has advantages over alte...
متن کاملTaking Generation as Abduction Seriously
This paper introduces 'assumptions', one-sided mutual beliefs, to construct a bidirectional architecture incorporating Hobbs et al.'s abduction. The integration of deductive parsing and abductive semantic interpretation may provide a basis for a bidirectional architecture. However, the idea of cost, the principal mechanism in Hobbs et al.'s abduction, is not workable for generation because it s...
متن کاملFormalizing Multimedia Interpretation based on Abduction over Description Logic Aboxes
The paper describes how interpretations of multimedia documents can be formally derived using abduction over domain knowledge represented in an ontology. The approach uses an expressive ontology specification language, namely description logics in combination with logic programming rules, and formalizes the multimedia interpretation process using a combined abduction and deduction operation. We...
متن کاملLaconic discourses and total eclipses: abduction in DICE
The goal of this chapter is demonstrate one particular use of abduction in the processing of natural language discourse. DICE (Discourse In Commonsense Entailment) can be used to model both interpretation and generation. For interpretation, it uses defeasible deduction to determine the discourse structures and event structures underlying multisentential texts. For generation, it uses abduction ...
متن کاملA classification of abduction: abduction for logic programming
Abduction is a methodology of scienti c researches. Peirce showed three types of abduction, and expressed them by one syllogism. Recently various researches on abduction or abductive logic have been developed in the elds of automated reasoning and machine learning. In order to systematically understand such researches and to clearly discuss abduction, this paper classi es abduction into ve type...
